Hellzapoppin The Art of Flying Nun
Want a limited-edition fluorescent piece of New Zealand music history in the form of a hand-screenprinted Ronnie van Hout approved art object that can live on your bookshelf or your wall and will make your friends jealous and has a sweet book inside it and is totally unique and numbered and will totes be worth a fortune one day but you’d never sell it cos it totally reminds you of that one time you saw the band at the Gladstone and nearly stole a poster but didn’t…
Published to mark the fortieth anniversary of the founding of Flying Nun Records in Ōtautahi Christchurch, Hellzapoppin’! is a new book from Christchurch Art Gallery that brings together original artwork and design, film, record covers, posters and photography from some of New Zealand’s favourite bands. From rare collectible records and vintage posters to original artworks and paste-up designs, this book explores the art and artists behind the music.
To finance the production of this exciting publication, the Gallery is launching a special pre sales offer, featuring a limited edition of 200 hand-screenprinted dustjackets and 200 posters. Art Gallery director Blair Jackson says “We’re really excited to be working with artist Ronnie van Hout to produce these posters and dustjackets, which are based on an absolute classic – Ronnie’s Flying Saucer cover for the Pin Group’s classic Go To Town EP.”
“Printed in fluoro inks on coloured paper, there will be multiple colourways available. And like the classic Flying Nun record covers we’re riffing off, no two will be identical.”
The printing is being done here in Christchurch by Gallery staff members and local artists Tjalling de Vries and Scott Jackson, and every copy will be numbered and stamped ‘Ronnie Approved’. There will only be 200 posters and 200 dustjackets produced, and they are expected to sell out fast. Get in now and make sure you don’t miss out.
The book with dustjacket will retail at $139, and the poster will retail at $199. The standard edition of the book will go on sale in August 2020 and will retail at $39.99. The pre-sales orders will be redeemed at that time. Featuring entertaining essays from Peter Vangioni, Kath Webster, Russell Brown and Flying Nun founder Roger Shepherd, the book will be interspersed with brief interview-style contributions from the people responsible for creating the art of the label. Heavily illustrated, it will feature original artwork for the records and posters, photography from the archives, and rarely seen vinyl releases and posters.
Jackson says “The Flying Nun aesthetic was foundational to a generation of impressionable young creators, myself included. By talking to the people responsible, this book will burst a few enduring myths, and maybe start some new ones.”
