Set in Delhi in 1946, this is the story of a liberal Brahmin family. Ma and Bappu are academics with two young daughters, the elder of whom, Alma, is fourteen years old and who - against their better judgement - is about to be married off.
These were uncertain times in India with the resulting chaos making things especially bad for girls and women, and her parents hope Alma will have a safe and secure future with her young trainee doctor.
Partition, though, changes everything. The family watches as their dream of an Independent India turns instead into a nightmare as they, along with their beloved country, are torn apart. - Joan
